Auckland Intensive Rehab

We have a Psychologist position 0.6 FTE available at ABI Intensive Rehab. ABI Rehabilitation is the leading provider of intensive in-patient brain injury rehabilitation in New Zealand, serving 18 of the 20 DHBs. ABI provide post-acute, residential, and community-based rehabilitation for clients (kiritaki) with traumatic brain injury. ABI is the only provider in Australasia to have attained the CARF Accreditation, an international gold standard for person centred, quality rehabilitation. We have a strong kiritaki and family/whānau focus with vibrant Māori Health Development initiatives supporting our mahi.

You will work within a dynamic and inter-professional team, comprising Psychologists, Rehabilitation Physicians, Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, Social Workers, Kaiarahi Kaupapa Maori, Nurses, and Rehab Assistants.

Our kiritaki have experienced moderate to severe brain injuries, and they receive intensive rehabilitation in our 36-bed facility with length of stay between 2 weeks to a maximum 6 months.

The work is fast-paced, varied and stimulating. You will contribute to key areas including:

  • psychological assessments
  • providing in-house training programmes to colleagues
  • risk assessments
  • neuropsychological screening assessments
  • developing, implementing and documenting behavioural management plans
  • providing psychological support and intervention for wide-ranging presentations (depression, anxiety, adjustment, emotional adjustment)
  • contributing to whānau hui (family meetings)
  • contributing to kiritaki discharge planning and reports
  • contributing to psychological formulations within the wider interdisciplinary team

We are ideally looking for dedicated psychologists at all career stages, who demonstrate excellent communication skills, have a strong focus on teamwork, have sound clinical reasoning skills, can complete risk assessments, and / or have experience in management of clients with behavioral challenges.

Our team of in-house health, clinical and neuropsychologists have peer group supports in place. You would have the opportunity to contribute to rehabilitation service planning and promotion, ongoing training and development of fellow team members, and clinical research. We require a high standard of work and in return are committed to our kaimahi.

We offer a pathway to support registration under the neuropsychological scope of practice with the NZPB, for psychologists who intend to enrol in the Otago Post Graduate Diploma in Neuropsychology. The pathway includes opportunities to work in both our intensive inpatient/residential setting and our community inter-disciplinary teams.

About you

Successful applicants will have a postgraduate qualification in psychology and be registered with the New Zealand Psychologist Board. 

You should have, as a minimum, formal post graduate paper(s) in psychology, and it is desirable that you have experience in mental health (or a related field), and a special interest in working with kiritaki with brain injury and their whānau.

For the right candidate, we could provide supervision and training to become an ACC Named Provider for Psychological Services and /or Neuropsychology contracts.
